Rhodes

RHODES

Rhodes is the largest island in the Dodecanese. Its capital city which is located at its northern tip, is the capital of the Prefecture with the Medieval Town in its centre. In 1988 the Medieval Town was designated as a World Heritage City. The Medieval Town of Rhodes is the result of different architectures belonging to various historic eras, predominantly those of the Knights of St. John.

Throughout its long history the different people who settled on Rhodes left their mark in all aspects of the island’s culture: art, language, architecture. Its strategic position brought to the island great wealth and made the city of Rhodes one of the leading cities of the ancient Greek world.

The Colossus of Rhodes, which is familiar to almost everyone, from its building to its destruction, lies a time span of merely 56 years. Yet the Colossus earned a place in the famous list of Wonders. The Colossus of Rhodes was not only a gigantic statue but it was a symbol of unity of the people who inhabited this beautiful Mediterranean island of Rhodes. Unfortunately due a very large earthquake in 226BC, the city was badly damaged and the Colossus was destroyed at it’s weakest point – the knee.

Today Rhodes offers an enormous variety of colours and forms, various activities as well as exquisite sightseeing tours. It is surrounded by marvellous beaches where one can take a swim to cool off before visiting the town of Rhodes with it’s modern buildings, picturesque neighbourhoods and imposing medieval edifices which are all swamped in greenery. The town itself has streets that are lined with trees giving a sense of coolness that can rarely be found. Vegetation even grows up as far as the walls of the castle, and the numerous palm trees allow you to experience a hint of a tropical island!

The Medieval Town of Rhodes also known as the Old Town, you will definitely enjoy one of the most interesting walks on the island. When you approach the walls of the Old Town of Rhodes, you are about to enter the oldest inhabited medieval town in Europe. Do not be misled by the term “medieval” into thinking that what you will see, is a ruined and deserted city. The total opposite applies! During the day, you can enjoy the hustle and bustle of locals as well as tourists enjoying their shopping or dinning in taverns with outstanding Greek local dishes. In the evening the stores remain open until the late hours but the nightlife begins as the various sounds can be heard form the many local bars and clubs that come to life.

Rhodes Island of today, with its 2400 years of history, is a city that impresses and fascinates its visitors as well as its locals. Its medieval aspect, fortified behind an impressive wall, merges harmoniously with the enriched cosmopolitan air of numerous modern resorts, luxurious hotels, broad avenues, upmarket stores, offers one of the highest developed tourism infrastructures in Greece!!!

Santorini

SANTORINI

Santorini is one of many breathtaking, up-market islands of Greece and of course the most romantic! It is the only island though that has either been visited by thousands of people or even those that may have not had the opportunity to explore this unique island, they will have already seen it on millions of postcards that have been launched worldwide as well as on calendars and various tourist board posters. An island that many dream of when they combine holidays and romance and once seen is even more exquisite than one can imagine. Santorini’s classic white images epitomize the very essence of Greek island charm: white houses that sit on a volcano like vanilla icing on a chocolate cake! One can sit for hours admiring the view of the blue sea from dawn till dusk with a light summer cocktail and still find it hard to avert ones eyes elsewhere!

The shape of Santorini Island as we know it today is nothing compared to the circular island that it was around 3500 BC when a huge volcanic eruption sank the center of the island leaving only a vast crater. Subsequent explosions tore the western chunk of the crater – now known as the little island of Thirasia – from the main body of Santorini and over the last few centuries 2 volcanic peaks known as Nea Kameni and Palea Kameni have risen from the sea in the center of the circular bay.

Once in Santorini, one should set their sites high for accommodation on top of the Caldera in order to be able to take in the most exquisite and talked about views!

Fira, which is the islands capital, is lively and highly cosmopolitan especially during the August period when all local Athenians escape to Santorini along with all other worldwide travelers. As a result there are plenty of up market restaurants and exclusive shops to choose from. Santorini as small as it is has the most jewelers and goldsmiths in the country all concentrated in Fira but still keeps the charming and authentic Greek style.

When you can finally tear yourself away from the civilized settlements, there is plenty to explore. From Oia, at the one end of the island, which is found on steep cliffs to the road making its’ way to Perissa and Kamari where you can enjoy the long beaches with black volcanic sand and take in the rays of the sun whilst cooling off in the Aegean Sea for a refreshing swim. Due to the black stones, the sun heats up the sea and the water is crystal clear right down to the very last visible pebble. There is also the beautiful “Red Beach” that fully lives up to its name. Numerous museums that can be visited, in order to learn in-depth about the Minoan Civilization, that was wiped out due to the volcanic eruptions. After recent excavations at Akrotiri (at the one other end of the island) a whole Minoan Town was uncovered that was covered by ash and lava. Good wines are also produced as a result of the volcanic soil and local wine tasting is definitely a must! Pleasure cruises to the “old” and “new” volcanoes and even just casual strolls allowing yourself to get lost in little walkways of Fira are some of the few activities that one can indulge in during their stay in Santorini!!

For those looking for a little night time excitement, no need to worry! After a romantic dinner overlooking the Caldera view, one can make their way to the in hot spots of the summer season and dance the night away until dawn! At dawn a beautiful sunrise champagne breakfast can be enjoyed whilst taking in the breathtaking views!

Mykonos

MYKONOS

This small and beautiful old fishing island which has been inhabited since the 5^th millennium BC, is only 87 kilometers and has become one of Europes most cosmopolitan islands without loosing its unique fishing village ambiance, Cycladic features and of course it’s traditional look of small white houses and their blue shutters. Since the 1950’s Mykonos has always been the most popular island for tourists worldwide as well as locals alike in the Mediterranean.

According to classical mythology, the Giants killed by Hercules in a fierce battle, are buried on the island under imposing blocks of mykonian granite. The name “Mykonos”, somewhat pejoratively, means a mass of stones or a rocky place. A later tradition attributes the name of the island to a hero by the name of Mykonos, the son of the king of Delos, Anios, who was the son of Apollon and nymph Rhoio, a descendent of Dionysus.

When arriving in Mykonos town, either by sea or by air, one can see the beautiful cube shaped all white houses which glow in the sunlight, and is drawn into the hustle and bustle atmosphere of the local labyrinth cobbled alleyways winding around the small graphic houses where you have the housewives catching up on the gossip of the day, purchasing their fruits and vegetables from the local roaming grocer with his donkey as well as the men enjoying either a Greek coffee or Ouzo with some meze in various kafenia (old coffee shops where usually only men visited) where everyone knows everyone. A little further down the hill you can see the breathtaking windmills that have stood there for centuries surrounded by numerous church bell towers.

When in Mykonos, you can enjoy shopping in the various alleyways which house exquisite boutiques that have been modified from small day to day homes into small shops but still keeping the character of the island. Well know brands can be found in the town, known as Chora as well as local hand made products from clothing, jewellery and works of art designed by the most celebrated artists and designers. If shopping is not your thing then why not try out the superb crystal clear beaches where you can draw in as much sun as possible during the day. The most well known beaches are Platys Gialos, Paradise beach and of course Super Paradise beach were the party begins from early on in the day and continues until early hours of the evening. Locals and tourists alike can be transported by local wooden fishing boats known as caiques to the various beaches as well as doing some beach hopping.

When the sun finally goes down, Mykonos comes to life as no one can imagine! A light cocktail can be enjoyed along Little Venice before proceeding to some of the most famous upmarket restaurants or even trying out various taverns with their local dishes. From there on one can try out one of many local bars and local clubs with their famous international DJ’s and party until the early hours of the morning till your feet can no longer hold you up!!
